What is Rahu Kalam?
The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. On each day of the week one of those parts is Rahu Kalam, and it is traditionally avoided for starting something new. Work that is already under way is not considered affected. It is also written Rahu Kaal, Rahukalam or Rahu Kaalam.
The weekday decides which part it is: the 2nd on Monday, the 7th on Tuesday, the 5th on Wednesday, the 6th on Thursday, the 4th on Friday, the 3rd on Saturday and the 8th on Sunday. Yamagandam (also Yamaganda or Yemagandam) and Gulika Kalam (also Gulika or Kuligai) are two more of the eight parts, fixed by the weekday in the same way. Calendars usually list Gulika Kalam with the other two, though traditions differ on how it applies to particular activities. Dur Muhurtam (also Durmuhurtham) is counted differently: the daytime is divided into fifteen muhurtas, and so is the night, and the weekday picks one or two of them; on Tuesday the second one falls after sunset. Varjyam and Amrit Kalam follow the Moon instead of the sun: each is a fixed stretch inside a nakshatra (the Moon's lunar mansion), so they can fall at night or early the next morning. When one falls on another date, that date is shown under its time.
Why this is not a fixed timetable
Some calendars print one Rahu Kalam timetable for every place: on Saturday it reads 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM. That timetable assumes the sun rises at 6:00 AM and sets at 6:00 PM. In Chennai today the sun rises at 6:01 AM and sets at 5:45 PM, a day of 11 hr 44 min, and Rahu Kalam is the 3rd eighth of it. So in Chennai today Rahu Kalam runs from 8:57 AM to 10:25 AM, 3 minutes earlier than the fixed timetable. Because sunrise and sunset move through the year, so do these periods, and they differ from city to city.
