The panchang day begins at sunrise, not at midnight: the night choghadiyas after midnight still belong to Saturday night, and before sunrise at 7:40 AM the choghadiya running is the previous night's. Next clock change in London: Sunday, 25 October 2026, when the clocks go back and times move to GMT (UTC+00:00).

What is choghadiya?

Choghadiya means "four ghadis", one eighth of the day or of the night. The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts, and so is the time from sunset to the next sunrise. Each part is ruled by a planet, and that decides whether it is counted as good for starting something.

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are auspicious; Udveg, Kaal and Rog are inauspicious. Char is generally treated as neutral, and many traditions count it as fine for travel. The names are also written Amrut, Chal (as Gujarati calendars print it) and Kal. The weekday decides the order: the day begins with the choghadiya of the weekday's own planet, so Sunday starts with Udveg, Monday with Amrit, Tuesday with Rog, Wednesday with Labh, Thursday with Shubh, Friday with Char and Saturday with Kaal.

Why the times are local

Because choghadiya is counted from sunrise and sunset, it has to be worked out for the place you are in. Times from an Indian calendar do not carry over to London: here the sun rises at 7:40 AM and sets at 5:49 PM local time, so today each day choghadiya is about 1 hr 16 min and each night one about 1 hr 44 min, not the hour and a half of a twelve-hour day. When the clocks change for daylight saving, the parts stay equal in real time. Sunrise and sunset here are the moments the top edge of the sun meets the horizon, with normal atmospheric refraction; a calendar that uses the centre of the sun will differ by a few minutes, and by more far from the equator.

The same page serves Harrow, Hounslow, Wembley and Southall: tithi and nakshatra end at the same moments there, and sunrise, sunset and the times worked out from them can differ by up to 2 minutes.
