Saturday, 24 October 2026 · California, USA · from sunrise to the next sunrise, all times in PDT (UTC−07:00)
The tithi in force at sunrise names the day. In Fremont the sun rose at 7:25 AM in Shukla Chaturdashi, which runs until 11:27 PM; after that comes Purnima, until 9:12 PM (Sun 25 Oct). A tithi ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth; what changes from city to city is the local clock time and which tithi is running at the local sunrise. Many fasts and festivals are decided by the tithi at another time of day (midday, evening, midnight or moonrise), so the sunrise tithi alone does not settle their dates.
Also written: Prathama (Pratipada), Ekadasi (Ekadashi), Poornima or Pournami (Purnima), Moola (Mula), Svati (Swati), Dhanishtha (Dhanishta), Shatabhishak (Shatabhisha), Garaja (Gara) and Bhadra (Vishti karana). Next clock change in Fremont: Sunday, 1 November 2026, when the clocks go back and times move to PST (UTC−08:00).

| Ritu (by the sidereal sun) | Sharada |

Two ways of naming the lunar month are in use. In the Purnimanta reckoning, common in North India, a month ends at the full moon; in the Amanta reckoning, used in Gujarat, Maharashtra and South India, it ends at the new moon. In the Shukla (bright) half both give the same name; in the Krishna (dark) half the Purnimanta name is one month ahead, except in an adhika (extra) month, which keeps its name throughout. The day and the tithi are the same in both. The Vikram Samvat year here begins in Chaitra, as in North India; in Gujarat it begins after Diwali, in Kartika, so between Chaitra and Kartika the Gujarati year number is one less. The moon and sun signs and the ayana here are sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa). The ritu is counted from the Sun's sidereal sign, two signs to a season (Mesha and Vrishabha Vasanta, Mithuna and Karka Grishma, Simha and Kanya Varsha, Tula and Vrishchika Sharada, Dhanu and Makara Hemanta, Kumbha and Meena Shishira); calendars that count the seasons by the lunar months or by the tropical sun can show the next season.
The same page serves San Jose, Sunnyvale and Milpitas: tithi and nakshatra end at the same moments there, and sunrise, sunset and the times worked out from them can differ by up to 2 minutes.
